Former Manchester gang member Alex is living the good life as a groundsman at an exclusive Surrey sports club, enjoying the attentions of bored wealthy women, as well as young Carla, back from university.
Set during a couple of hot summer months, Alex tries to behave like a gentleman towards the lovely Carla. They grow closer during a violent incident. But, during that stressful episode, he also meets his "once in a lifetime" girl, Joely. Inexplicably, he rejects Joely's advances, thinking something that perfect must really be selfish and false.
Soon after, Alex receives an anonymous offer to commit a "stranger on stranger" murder. Somebody clearly knows about his criminal past. He finds all the demons of his previous life coming back to him, as he struggles with the idea of taking the contract. After a reality-trip home to see his family, Alex realises, to have the Joely or the Carla, and maintain an even better new life, he has to accept the contract, and starts to plan.
Meanwhile, Joely gives him a second chance.
